Who Answers For The AI Agent?

At 9.12 on a Tuesday morning, Margaret’s AI assistant confirms her card on an email that looks exactly like her pharmacy. By lunchtime $1,900 has gone. She can’t say who authorised it, can’t show what happened, and can’t find the off switch.

AI agents have started to act in our names. This short paper is about what is at stake for every person, business and community, and how we stay in charge from the bottom up, Circle → City → Country.

By Darryl S Astin, founder, Society OS Pty Ltd · 17 pages, 15-minute read (the short version is on page 2) · Pre-publication draft · Margaret’s story is illustrative, not a customer story

When A Machine Acts For You, Three Things Can Go Wrong

Nobody gave it permission

A machine acts in your name beyond what you meant, or someone else’s machine pretends to be you.

“I never said it could do that.”

Nobody can prove what happened

There is no record you can read of who asked for what, what the machine did and why.

“I can’t show the bank anything.”

Nobody can stop it

There is no clear off switch, no one to call, and no way to take back the keys.

“I don’t even know who to ring.”

Three questions for any machine

Who authorised it? Can we prove what it did? Can we stop it, safely?

If any answer is “no”, the machine is not ready to act in your name.

The Second Tuesday

The paper follows Margaret, a café owner, a parish and a council to a different Tuesday, where permissions can be read, actions are recorded and the off switch is easy to find. None of it needs a breakthrough in AI.

Honest About What Is Not True Yet

No Foundation incorporated, no currency issued, drafts labelled as drafts. The facts and data sit in an Evidence section at the back, with sources.

Pass it on

Most people have never heard the three questions. Send the paper to one person who looks after someone like Margaret, or runs a business like Tom’s. Free to share in full, with credit to Society OS.

See The Pattern Working

Under the Sovereign Success umbrella (Self Success, Sphere Success, Society Success), Place & Space gives each organisation a public Presence it owns, with a Trust Report that labels where every fact came from.
